Discerning God's Call: Affinity, Ability, Opportunity

I admit I am the worst person when it comes to listening to God speak. I have a feeling I wouldn't even notice even if he threw words at my face and they magically turned into rotten tomatoes upon landing. Fortunately, there are people like Tim Keller who make some sense out of the word for people like me, who need an extra push to understand the word of God. I have been praying for awhile and I do believe I am finally in the right track to finding an answer to the big question, "how do you discern a call?"
There are three parts to discerning a call. The first part is you feel it, want it, and there is a passion for it (Affinity). The second part is when other people agree that you have the talents, the gifts and the skills (Ability). The third part is, do things open up or is there an opportunity that comes to you (Opportunity). That is the best way to say, 'God speaks to my own heart, God works through friends, and God is Lord of History'. If all three don't come together, then you don't have a call.- Timothy J. Keller
So there you go... I couldn't word it better than that. I used to think that if you just read the word of God, bible, I would certainly find the answer to any question. Though my stance has not completely changed, I must say I have been approaching it the wrong way. You can't simply open the bible and randomly, yet miraculously, find something that directly applies to you. However, we need to understand that it is through meditation of the word that we may be able to make the teaching directly applicable to our daily lives. I wish Keller had some bible passages that directly backup his opinion about discerning God's call, but I am sure I could find something out there if I look hard enough.
